The 500-year-old mosque at Lalmonirhat is made of fish bones and oyster shells

Rumon Hossain Zilhaj,

District Special Representative at Lalmonirhat:

The mosque located in Hajipara village of Goral Union of Kaliganj Upazila of Lalmonirhat is 500 years old; Locals believe that its construction style proves it.

According to local information, the one-row mosque with three domes was built during the Mughal period due to the small number of Muslims in the area. That's why this mosque is better known as 'Ek Qatar' mosque in the area.

As there is only one queue for prayers inside the mosque, not more than 10 to 12 people can pray together in congregation. Fridays are more of a problem for securing space. However, the locals could not give a clear idea why such a small mosque was built.

No sign of brick or cement was found on the wall. When you hit the wall with a hammer, it shoots out like flames. There is an ancient grave on the left side of the mosque. It is assumed that the grave belongs to the builder of the mosque.

And on the right side stands the daha of the Shia community, whose walls show ancient craftsmanship in every part. Besides, there are two more graves in front of the mosque. Although the mosque carries ancient memories, no one from the archeology department has visited it. But people come from different places to see the mosque every day.

Kaliganj Upazila Awami League General Secretary Mizanur Rahman Miju said that 'Ek Qatar' mosque of Hajipara village is one of the oldest mosques. Visitors flock from different parts of the country to catch a glimpse of the mosque.

If the government takes measures to preserve this three-domed mosque, the next generation will know about this ancient memory He claimed that the Department of Antiquities needs to look into conservation and planned renovation of the oldest monuments of Islamic propagation located at Lalmonirhat.
