Jhenaidah-1 Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) and District Awami League President Abdul Hai passed away (Innalillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun).


He died in the early hours of Saturday (March 16) while undergoing treatment at Bamrundgrad Hospital in Thailand. His personal assistant Shahidul Islam confirmed the death.


Abdul Hai was born on May 1, 1952 in Mohammadpur village of Shailkupa upazila. He is the youngest among 3 sons and 2 daughters of father Fayzuddin Mollah and mother Chakiran Necha. His education began in the primary school of the neighboring village of Mirzapur. After passing from there, he was admitted to Basantpur Secondary School. At the end of secondary school, he was admitted to Jhenaidah Keshavchandra College. From there he passed BA with merit.


He got involved in politics while studying in Basantpur Secondary School. In 1968, he got the responsibility of the president of the then subdivision Chhatra League. Run to the side of workers in danger. Since then his popularity started. In 1969, he was elected as the VP of Govt. KC College Students' Union. In the same year, he was elected the vice-president of the Greater Jessore District Chhatra League.


When the independence war started in 1971, he jumped into the liberation war at the call of Bangabandhu. There he signed the leadership. He was the one who hoisted the first flag of independent Bengal at Jhenaidah, risking his life, ignoring the bloodshed of the anti-independence people.After the independence of the country, he served as the convener of the Jhenaidah Jubo League and in 1973 as the Sub-Divisional President of the Jubo League. He was the youth and sports affairs secretary of the district Awami League in the eighties. Later, in 1987, he was elected the organizing secretary of Jhenaidah district Awami League and later the joint general secretary of the council of Jhenaidah district Awami League.


In 1996, he served as the acting general secretary of the district Awami League. Elected General Secretary in 1998. In 2001, he was elected Member of Parliament from Jhenaidah-1 as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 8th National Parliament Elections.


BNP came to power in 2001 elections. Awami League candidate won only 58 seats in that election. Among these, the Shailkupa seat of the brave freedom fighter Abdul Hai was notable.

After 30 consecutive years of independence, he rescued the Shailkupa constituency from the hands of the BNP and took it over to the Awami League. In 2001, Jhenaidah District Awami League convener was elected. In 2005, Abdul Hai became the president of Jhenaidah district Awami League. He was re-elected as a member of parliament as a party candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 2008 Ninth National Parliament Election. From 2012 to 2014, he faithfully served as the State Minister of the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Resources. In 2014, he was again elected as a member of parliament as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 10th national parliamentary election. Jhenaidah District Awami League President was elected for the second time in the Council of 2015 and was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 11th Parliament Election after receiving party nomination in the 2018 National Election.


In 2022, he was elected the district Awami League president for the third time in the district Awami League conference. He was nominated by Awami League in the last 12th National Parliament election and won with a huge vote.


People of various classes and professions including the district Awami League have expressed deep grief over the death of Abdul Hai. His funeral and burial are yet to be confirmed from the family.
