Upazila Nirbahi Officer has seized 24 sacks of Jail Purnabasan rice from a house in Maulanakandi village of Tajumuddin Chandpur Union of Bhola.
The operation was conducted on the basis of tip-off at 4:30 pm on Friday, March 15.
Tajumaddin police station and upazila executive officer's office said that Jale Rabiul and his son-in-law Abdus Shahid, residents of Ward No. 5 of Chandpur Union of the upazila, kept these rice in their living room.
On receiving the news, Upazila Civil Officer Shubo Debnath and Upazila Fisheries Officer Amir Hossain and Tajumuddin Thana Officer-in-Charge Anwarul Islam conducted a raid along with the police and recovered 720 kg of rice in 24 sacks of government seal.
At that time all the men and women living in that house ran away. Later the recovered rice was brought to the police station under the custody of the Upazila Fisheries Officer.
Upazila executive officer Shubo Debnath said that an investigation committee will be formed in this regard. Legal action will be taken against the culprits.
A source claimed that every year during the distribution of rehabilitation rice to the fishermen, due to the neglect of duty of the tag officer, a syndicate of the Union Parishad in the name of the fishermen sold the rice in the black market without giving less amount to the fishermen. Even though government rice has been seized several times before, the black market syndicate remains out of touch. Common fishermen demand action against those involved subject to proper investigation.
