The commission meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Tuesday (February 6). After the meeting, the Election Commission (EC) has started preparations for the Upazila Parishad elections. Upazila Parishad elections will be held in four phases this time. EC Secretary Md Jahangir Alam informed this information that the first phase of voting will start from May 4.
The EC secretary said that the EC is thinking about 3 issues in the secondary examination, the holy month of Ramadan and the rainy season. At present, the number of upazilas eligible for election is 452. Voting will be done in four stages. The first phase will be held on May 4, the second phase on May 11, the third phase on May 18 and the fourth and final phase on May 25.
The EC Secretary also said that in the first phase, voting will be held for the posts of Chairman, Vice Chairman and Women Vice Chairman of the Upazila Parishad on May 4. Next week, the details and name of the upazila will be announced.
There are 495 Upazila Parishads in the country. The last Upazila Parishad election started on March 10, 2019. The five-phase voting ended in June last year.
According to the existing law, the term of the Upazila Parishad starts from the day of the first meeting. After five years he served in the elected council. There is an obligation to hold elections within 180 days before the expiry of the term.
