Referring to battery-powered auto-rickshaws as very dangerous, Shamim Osman, a member of the ruling party in the National Parliament, said that these auto-rickshaws steal 90 percent of the electricity by charging them. They are consuming our 7/80 MW electricity.
In the National Question and Answer on Thursday (February 8), he demanded to stop these battery-powered auto-rickshaws.
In response, the battery-powered auto-rickshaw made with its own technology has been termed as 'Bengal Tressler' by the Minister of State for Power, Nasrul Hamid, pointing out that electric vehicles are cost-effective and environment-friendly. The engine efficiency of an oil powered car is 20 percent. On the other hand, the efficiency level of electrical appliances is 80 percent. Basically we encourage electric cars to come to market as fast as possible.
The state minister said, the power department has made a policy to set up electric car charging stations. According to this policy, anyone can make a charge station.
Nasrul Hamid said, I call these 40 lakh three wheelers Bangla Tresler. Making it with your own hands. Working with our innovative power. We are not stopping them. It may have mechanical faults. But the return of the electricity that is being used is much higher. These 4 million rickshaw pullers who are using electricity, must be earning.
He said, I think there is as much public transport (bus) in Bangladesh. They should be brought to power quickly. Cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Bangladesh's transport sector accounts for 18 percent of carbon emissions. However, there is concern about the illegal use of electricity. We are worried about it. Electricity companies are keeping an eye on whether illegal electricity is being used anywhere.
In response to a question from M. Abdul Latif, State Minister Nasrul Hamid said, including captive and off-grid renewable energy, the current total power generation capacity is 29,727 megawatts. And the grid-based production capacity is 26 thousand 504 MW. Among them, natural gas-based production capacity is 11,350 MW (43 percent), furnace oil-based 6,492 MW (24 percent), diesel-based 826 MW (3 percent), coal-based 4,491 MW (17 percent), hydro 230 MW (1 percent ), ongrid solar power 459 MW (two percent), electricity import two thousand 656 MW (10 percent).
The state minister said that in terms of demand, electricity is generated according to the availability of power plants. In fiscal year 2022-23, against the peak demand of electricity during summer, the peak generation on April 19 was 15,648 MW. Due to reduced demand of electricity in winter, the maximum production of electricity in winter this year has come down to 10,000 to 12,000 MW. During the coming summer, the potential demand for electricity will rise to about 17,500 MW.
