Hahe Geingob died at Lady Pohamba Hospital in the country's capital, Windhoek. His wife and children were by his side at the time of his death. Acting President of Namibia, Nangolo Mbumba, issued a condolence statement on Geingob's official Facebook page.
Geingob revealed that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014. He was ineligible for re-election, as the country's constitution allows a person to serve two terms as president.
Namibia, a former German colony, gained independence from South Africa in 1990. The country is scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in November.
