The government of the country has contacted to take back the Border Guard Police (BGP) members who took shelter on the border of Bangladesh in the conflict between the Myanmar army and the rebel group Arakan Army in Rakhine state bordering Myanmar, said the foreign minister. Hasan Mahmud.
The minister said this during an exchange of views with journalists on Monday (February 5) afternoon at the ministry, including a visit to Brussels.
Stating that the border is secure, the foreign minister said, "There has been talk between our two sides to take back BGP members." Discussions are going on whether they will be taken back by air or by river.
In response to the question that if the BGP members do not want to go back, Hasan Mahmud said that they definitely want to go. This is why we are discussing. As they have escaped, we have given them shelter. The Myanmar government wants to take them back. Communication is ongoing from both sides.
The minister said that so far 95 registered BGP members have entered Bangladesh. This number may increase later. Among the BGP members who took shelter, the injured are being treated at Cox's Bazar Hospital.
When asked whether the cooperation of neighboring countries or anyone else will be sought in the ongoing situation, the minister said that as the talks between the two countries are ongoing, there is no condition to involve other organizations including the United Nations.
