Nobel laureate in peace. The High Court has decided to file an income tax appeal for the tax year 2011 to 13 by depositing Tk 50 crore to Muhammad Yunus's Grameen Telecom Trust.
Monday (February 12) Justice Md. The High Court bench of Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Rashed Jahangir passed the verdict.
Before this, on January 28, he appeared in the court and applied to the labor appeal tribunal against the judgment of the labor court in the case of violation of the labor law. Yunus and 3 other top officials of Grameen Telecom. The High Court rejected the application.
The High Court said that according to the law, Dr. Yunus has to pay. No mercy here.
On January 1, the chairman of the third labor court of Dhaka, Sheikh Marina Sultana, in a case against the chairman of Grameen Telecom. Yunus and its director Ashraful Hasan, Nurjahan Begum and M Shahjahan were sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. At the same time, the court sentenced all 4 of them to a fine of 30,000 taka and in default of payment, another 25 days imprisonment. And if they applied for separate bail after the verdict, the court granted bail to all 4 people in view of their application.
It is to be noted that on September 9, 2021, the case was filed in the Third Labor Court of Dhaka by Labor Inspector (General) SM Arifuzzaman of the Inspection Department of Factories and Institutions. According to the case documents, IFED officials visited Grameen Telecom's office in Mirpur, Dhaka on August 16, 2021 and found several violations of labor laws. On August 19 of that year, a letter was sent to the Grameen Telecom Authority saying that the company was supposed to make 67 employees permanent, but it was not done. Besides, the employee participation and welfare fund is yet to be constituted and even five percent of the company's dividend which was supposed to be paid to the workers has not been paid.
