Security has been beefed up in Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhia and Teknaf due to ongoing clashes between Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP) and the insurgent group Arkan Army along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.
Bangladesh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdullah Al-Mamun said this on Tuesday (February 6) when he visited policeman Razzak, who was seriously injured in the attack on the BNP rally on October 28, at Rajarbagh Police Hospital in the capital.
The IGP said that there is no reason to worry about the security of the border areas because of the internal conflict in Myanmar. The police will follow the orders of the government to resolve the border unrest. Police have been instructed to maintain internal law and order.
He also said that the government is supporting the security of those who are fleeing through the border.
For the past few days, fierce clashes have been going on between Ghumdhum Union of Naikxyongchari Upazila of Bandarban District of Bangladesh-Myanmar, Palangkhali Union of Ukhia Upazila of Cox's Bazar District and Hwangkyong, Hnila Union of Teknaf Upazila. This conflict has become serious since last Saturday. So far, 229 members of Myanmar's BGP, unable to survive with the Arkan Army, infiltrated through various borders of Bangladesh and took refuge with Bangladesh Border Guard members. Among them, 15 members are seriously injured and are being treated under tight security.
