A fire broke out in a shoe factory in Old Dhaka of the capital. The fire occurred in Mahuttuli area on Monday (February 5) at 9:20 am.


Shahjahan Shikder, officer-in-charge of media cell of fire service, told the media that a fire broke out in a shoe factory on the ground floor of a one-story building next to Mahuttuli Tara Mosque in Old Dhaka sometime after 9 am.


After receiving the information at 9:20 am, 5 units of fire service reached the spot and started working to control the fire. Official fire service members brought the fire under control at 9:52.


However, initially the cause of the fire and the amount of damage was not known.


It is to be noted that 27 thousand 624 fire incidents occurred across the country last year. As such, an average of 77 fires occurred daily. 102 people were killed and 281 injured in the fire. The loss of assets is 792 crores 36 lakhs 82 thousand 14 taka. The fire service informed this information in a press release on Sunday.


According to fire service sources, 48 ​​fire service personnel were injured while extinguishing the fire. And one worker died in a road accident on the way to fire fighting. Males account for more of those injured and killed in fires. Out of the 281 injured across the country, 221 were men and 60 were women, and 73 were men and 29 were women among the 102 killed.


According to the fire service, most of the fire incidents have occurred from electrical disturbances, burning bits of bidi-cigarettes, stoves and gas lines. According to the statistics, 9 thousand 813 fire incidents occurred due to electrical disturbances, 4 thousand 906 from burning pieces of bidi-cigarettes, 4 thousand 117 from stoves. Apart from this, 923 fires occurred due to children playing with fire, 770 due to gas line leakage, 125 due to explosion of gas cylinders and boilers and 87 due to burning of matches.

According to the statistics, most of the fires occurred in houses or residential buildings. There are 6,956 house fires across the country, which is 25.18 percent of the total fire incidents. Apart from this, 4 thousand 277 in cowsheds and haystacks, 2 thousand 938 in kitchens, 1 thousand 821 in shops, 1 thousand 264 in bazaar, 759 in markets, 403 in garment industries, 248 in hospitals-clinics and pharmacies, 246 in restaurants, 232 in power substations, 199 in slums, multi-storied. There were 147 fires in buildings, 140 in educational institutions, 96 in religious institutions and 94 in jute warehouses.


Last year, there were 506 fires in land vehicles, 73 in boats and 12 in trains across the country. According to the monthly fire statistics, March, April and May last year saw more fire incidents.
