The United Nations Human Rights Council has urged the police not to use force unless absolutely necessary in view of the upcoming 12th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. If force is to be used, it should be done legally—with restraint and at a proportionate rate, the press note said. If excessive force is used, it should be promptly investigated and the culprits brought to justice. Apart from this, the authorities should properly comply with the responsibility of human rights. People should be able to peacefully assemble and express their opinions freely. We call for a peaceful, inclusive and secure environment for all political parties, their supporters and security forces for free and fair elections. The press note also mentions that there have been various types of violence in the rallies of the opposition parties recently. Where the police used rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons. The police and some people in plain clothes beat the protestors with hammers, sticks and iron rods. Many opposition supporters and police were injured. Apart from this, a search was conducted at the house of the opposition leader by identifying himself as a member of the security forces.
